Aluminum, poly or metal
All three hold up to outdoor service, but each fits a different setting. Aluminum chairs, found in aluminum frame chairs, are light, come in the widest range of looks and suit hotel terraces and upscale patios. poly-molded chairs are one piece, the easiest to hose clean and available in bright colors for casual and family venues. Metal chairs such as the Coral Side Chair, with a perforated metal seat and back, and the Driftwood Side Chair, with a mesh seat, let rain drain through and dry quickly.
Sun, rain and wind
Items marked Indoor/Outdoor and all poly-molded chairs are UV-resistant and suited to year-round outdoor use. Slatted, mesh and perforated seats shed water faster after a storm than solid seats. On windy rooftops, stack chairs at close or position them against a wall.
Stacking and storage
Most chairs here stack, which makes clearing the patio for weather, cleaning or events a quick job. The poly-molded Solstice Side Chair and aluminum Shoreline Side Chair are good examples, both light enough for one person to carry a short stack.
Comfort for longer meals
Woven textilene seats, such as on the Mist chairs, and faux wicker designs flex slightly and feel softer over a long dinner than a hard seat. Arm versions give extra support; see arm chairs.
Layout and pairing
Keep about 24″ of table edge per seat and leave extra aisle room for servers on uneven paving. Pair chairs with outdoor table tops and weather-treated bases for a complete table.
