When backless makes sense

Backless stools take the least visual and floor space of any bar seating. They slide all the way under a counter when not in use, which keeps walkways open in narrow bars and along window rails. They also suit spaces where guests stay for a drink or quick bite rather than a long meal. If your guests linger, compare stools with backs in metal frame bar stools.

The two models

  • The Holloway Backless Stool has a 17″ x 17″ footprint and lists a seat height range of 28–32.5″.
  • The Whitby Backless Stool is slightly more compact at 16″ x 16″, with a listed seat height range of 28.25–32.75″.

Both use a solid ash wood seat, which wipes clean easily and wears well at busy bars.

Getting the height right

Both stools list seat heights that span standard bar height, roughly 29–31″, which pairs with 40–42″ bar tops and rails. Measure from the floor to the underside of the bar and aim for about 10–12″ of leg room. Our bar stool height guide covers this step by step.

Spacing

With no back or arms, backless stools can sit a little closer, but about 24″ of bar per stool still gives guests room to set down a plate and glass.

Ordering

The minimum is 4 stools per item. Pricing steps down at 6, 20, 60 and 100 pieces. Both stools are in stock and typically ship in 2–3 days. Browse all bar stools for more styles.
